Why Redevelop?

A new clean gas powered bus fleet
Earlier this year the State Government unveiled a $250 million plan to replace more than a quarter of State Transit’s bus fleet – the biggest ever investment in new buses in NSW history. Environmental factors were a key consideration in the purchase of the new buses.

The new fleet will allow Sydney Buses to improve the reliability, comfort and safety of our public transport network and reduce emissions.

    Every bus will be:
    • a low-floored, fully accessible vehicle,
    • air-conditioned,
    • designed to meet the highest safety standards for drivers and passengers, and
    • environmentally-friendly, generating the lowest emissions of any mass-produced conventional commercial buses in Australia.

The Opportunity to build Australia’s Largest Clean Green-Friendly Bus Depot
The Leichhardt Bus Depot in its current form has exceeded its life expectancy and is no longer fit for its purpose.

There is insufficient parking space for the new fleet of buses, inadequate staff amenities and outdated maintenance buildings which no longer comply with building code requirements. The proposed depot redevelopment will result in a modern, clean and green custom-built facility.

The upgrading of the Leichhardt Depot is paramount to ensure Sydney Buses can continue to service passenger growth in Leichhardt and the Inner West.
