State Transit's Leichhardt bus depot is to be redeveloped in a $34 million project to make a home for Australia's largest environmentally friendly bus fleet.

The upgrade will allow the depot to support a fleet of up to 200 buses, the vast majority of which will be environmentally friendly, low-emission gas-powered buses.

The new depot will improve bus services for passengers in the Inner West, protect the heritage buildings on the site, minimise the impact of noise and light on neighbours, and use recycled water.
